At this time of year, when most leaves have fallen from trees, conifers stand out in the landscape. Historically, only 3 species of conifers are native to Allegheny County. However, due to their evergreen needles and winter beauty, people have planted dozens of different species, from the common Colorado blue spruce (Picea pungens) to unusual forms of false-cypress (Chamaecyparis spp.).
